Bikes-in Schools Pilot Application

We went all out in our application to be one of two schools in Wellington to pilot the Bikes-in-Schools programme. Follow the link below to check out the wonderful video Matt and Urs put together as our application. Thanks to all the people who were willing to go on video and support the application.

If successful we will receive a significant package from the Wellington City Council which includes a bike track, a pump track and a skills track, a fleet of bikes, storage for the bikes and helmets for all our students. This is a wonderful opportunity and will be great for the suburb. We REALLY, REALLY, REALLY hope we are successful. Our application has been acknowledged and we expect to hear from the selection committee in a fortnight.

Term 2 Inquiry: World War 1 - A Living Story

Next term we will be joining the world as it remembers World War One 100 years on. We will study the history of World War One, but we particularly want to look at the way people have communicated their experiences/stories of war through the arts - poetry, painting, theatre, posters, short stories etc.

We also would like to explore why wars happen and what alternatives there might be to solving conflict through war.

Following on from this inquiry we will be exploring and then implementing the Cool Schools Peer Mediation Programme in which students learn to help other students solve altercations and conflict.

If you have any resources, contacts or ideas that might help support this very exciting inquiry, please do not hesitate to let us know.

Wilfred Owen - one of the great war poets who was killed a week before the end of World War 1 almost to the hour - said, "All a poet can do today is warn. That is why the true Poets must be truthful." We would like to learn the "truths" contained in both the historical facts and the representations of war in the arts. We expect that students will explore multiple perspectives and through that journey, perhaps, begin to develop their own personal response like the little girl in the excerpt below

Out of the mouths of babes.....

excerpt from The People, Yes
by Carl Sandburg
The little girl saw her first troop parade and asked,
"What are those?"
"Soldiers."
"What are soldiers?"
"They are for war. They fight and each tries to kill as many of the other side as he can."
The girl held still and studied.
"Do you know . . . I know something?"
"Yes, what is it you know?"
"Sometime they'll give a war and nobody will come."

Urgent! Opportunity - Junior Football Parade at Phoenix Last Game

Hi all

The Wellington Phoenix want to celebrate the start of the junior football season with a Junior Club parade at the last Phoenix game this Saturday from 4pm at Westpac Stadium.

Merrick, our Monday football teacher, will be taking part in the parade – and he would love as many Amesbury football players as possible to join in. There is no age limit, and a mix of boys and girls is ideal.

Merrick coaches for North Wellington Club and he is happy for any Amesbury students who are not affiliated with a club, who would like to participate, to join North Wellington Club for the parade.

All children who join the parade will receive free entry to the game. Adult supervisors will also receive free entry.

If your child is keen to be involved in the parade, please email merrickjkeenan04@hotmail.com no later than 8am tomorrow/Thursday morning and advise the following:

 1)      child’s name, age and contact phone number
2)      your name and contact phone number (cellphone is best) if you can help as an adult co-ordinator on the day (one adult is required per 12 children)

Kids and adult supervisors will receive free entry to the game.

Extra adults will be able to purchase tickets at a reduced rate.  We can let you know the code for this once we have the kids’ names confirmed.

Further details are attached.Junior Parade Information
Time is of the essence, so please reply to merrickjkeenan04@hotmail,com asap if interested.
This is usually great fun for juniors players who love getting down onto the pitch at Westpac and it will be their last chance to see the Phoenix players in action this season.

If you have any questions, please email Merrick.
