Jump Rope for Heart Skip-a-Thon

On Wednesday the 26th September we will be taking part in the Jump Rope for Heart Skip-a-thon.
The goal is to raise awareness of being healthy and fit in order to maintain a healthy heart is cardiovascular disease is New Zealand’s number one killer (40% of all deaths).  The Heart foundation relies on public generosity to fund its non-profit organisation and we are proud to support their cause.
Each child will be sent home with a challenge booklet. They will set a goal and on the day of the skip-a-thon, will set out to achieve this goal using a variety of different skipping techniques. We ask that each child find sponsors to support them in their challenge, either by pledging an amount to each skip or a donation (a guide to safe sponsor gathering is outlined in the booklet). Please do not collect the money until after the skip-a-thon.   Once all monies have been collected, please send in to school in a sealed, named envelope by Wednesday 17th October.
Happy Skipping!

Fiction Fun Week

September 8th is International Literacy Day and we will celebrate this with a Fiction Fun Week and Book Collection for Samoa at school next week.

The student librarians are organising lunchtime activities to promote reading.  They include Lucky Dip Library Book Day, Library Treasure Hunt, a drawing/colouring competition and Book Character Day.  Book Character Day will be Friday 7th September and we would like all children to come to school dressed as a book character. The student librarians will be judging the book character costumes but please don’t feel you have to go to a lot of expense or effort. The emphasis is on fun!

Next week we will also collect books to donate to school libraries in Samoa.  Emily L and Caitlyn W have been corresponding with a librarian in Samoa who coordinates the collection and distribution of books to schools in Samoa, many of whom don’t even have a school library. If you have children’s books in good condition that you no longer require we would appreciate it if they could be sent to school and placed in the donation box in the library.
